Portland Community College Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC) Training Center

The Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC) Training Center in Scappoose is a world-class facility for developing an advanced manufacturing workforce through applied research and technical training in an apprenticeship model. The large manufacturing space is wrapped with hands-on tech spaces. This area integrates with the didactic academic learning wing through a circulation spine with collaborative spaces. Light wells are strategically placed where the programs interface, bringing natural light deep into the building’s center. Hands-on manufacturing spaces are visible throughout the facility. Classrooms feature generous windows, while manufacturing spaces rely largely on translucent panels and clerestories for even, diffused natural light, as well as large glass overhead doors for moving equipment and materials.

Designed around a clustered plan, the Training Center and future campus buildings are grouped in the middle of the site, with parking on the perimeter. The building’s location and orientation optimize daylighting and views and allow for future eastward expansion. Exterior concrete and metal panels offer durability and fit within the surrounding manufacturing and industrial context near the Scappoose Airport. The LEED Silver facility incorporates onsite stormwater management and rooftop solar panels. Hennebery Eddy partnered on the advanced manufacturing facility design under a progressive design-build contract with Mortenson Construction; this was PCC’s first design-build project.
